Why a Virtual Event in 2020?

The Foley Alabama Lions Club members watched the progress of COVID-19 in our nation and our region for months. We initially thought that our main fundraising event would have to be cancelled for 2020. We stayed hopeful, as Alabama stayed somewhat “open” after the initial quarantine period. We consulted a few avid cyclists, and numerous area bike shops. We found that almost all “real world” cycling events in our region were either cancelled or converted to a “virtual event” of some kind.

We had also received the news that the Foley Kiwanis, our long-time partners in this event, had decided to withdraw. Maybe it just isn’t meant to be…

We were hopeful again when we learned that some organizations were having participants just submit their own ride routes. Ideas for a virtual version of Le Tour De Foley began to develop! We saw that some groups had expanded their “virtual events” from a single day to three days or a week. Then, we thought, “Why just a week? October is a great month to ride – we’ll make it THREE weeks!” We decided to move ahead just a few days ago, so we are building the launch NOW, in the middle of August. With all this flexibility available to riders, we came up with the name, “Flex Ride”, and away we go!

We appreciate your patience in finding out about this in August instead of March or April. We know we can count on many of you to participate. In fact, a few sponsors are already on board. Please help us spread the word!

Posters will be coming soon, and can be shared electronically once they’re available. Of course, social media is another great way to spread the word. Our Facebook pages are Tour De Foley and Baldwin Bicycle Fest, and the launch posts will appear TODAY! Thanks for your past participation, and your support for this year’s Le Tour De Foley!

From your Foley Alabama Lions Club.
